Randwick - Adaptive Re-Use

PROJECTS / Sustainable

Project Description

As housing shortages grow and Sydney’s urban landscape continues to change, the need for innovative affordable housing solutions has never been greater. This project shows how underused commercial spaces can be converted into housing that reduce environmental impact, while extending the life of existing buildings. With land and resources limited, repurposing existing structures is a crucial step towards a more sustainable future.

At the front the existing commercial façade and footprint was retained, with the ground floor level raised and buffered with landscaping, to create visual and acoustic separation from the active urban interface. Retaining the existing brick façade and side perimeter walls preserved a substantial portion of the building’s embodied carbon and reduced construction waste, while new window and door openings thoughtfully inserted to optimise the homes orientation and thermal performance.

New construction works at the rear and internal modifications were undertaken to provide multiple living areas, 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, comprising a total of 200m2 of floor area on a compact 230m2 site. You can view this project in more detail in our CASE STUDIES.
