Mosman – Sydney Harbour Views
Project Description
This quintessential Mosman Federation home located in Bradley’s Head Conservation Area had access to spectacular views towards the Sydney Harbour Bridge. However, due to its unprotected western orientation, those views were sacrificed to shield the occupants from the penetrating heat and glare. The existing planning arrangements were similarly less than ideal, with utilitarian areas blocking the best harbour vantage points and no suitable outdoor living areas. This project is a good example of how Look Design Group views existing buildings as opportunities to preserve architectural heritage and reduce environmental impact through thoughtful, resource-conscious design.
It was important for the new additions to be sympathetic to the architectural heritage of the home and respectful of the harbour views enjoyed by the neighbouring properties, while also improving the homes thermal comfort. Therefore, only the rear bow window was removed and portions of the existing floor area reconfigured, to create improved living areas adjoining expansive covered balconies. The new covered balconies maximise access to harbour views while providing passive solar protection, improved thermal comfort and valuable outdoor living space. The minimalist floor-to-ceiling double glazing create a seamless indoor-outdoor connection with the Sydney Harbour panorama beyond, which can now be enjoyed throughout the year.
The home’s interior and exterior were completely restored and revitalised as part of the renovation process, in conjunction with thermal performance upgrades including double glazing and enhanced insulation throughout. The end result is an exquisitely crafted home that utilises climate science to create a comfortable, family home that is as sustainable as it is beautiful.
